About FreeImageConvert

Last updated: October 18, 2026

What it does

FreeImageConvert is a free online tool for converting images between JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF and BMP formats. It's built for the everyday cases that come up constantly: opening iPhone HEIC photos on a Windows PC, turning a WebP image into a JPG a client can actually open, or preparing a PNG for a background-removal tool.

How client-side conversion works

Every conversion happens locally, inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

When you choose a file, the site decodes it using JavaScript in the page itself: the heic2any library handles HEIC/HEIF decoding, and the browser's built-in Canvas API handles encoding into the target format. Batch conversions are zipped for download using JSZip. Because the work happens on your device, your images never leave it, you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and conversion still works, and there's no file waiting in some server's temp folder afterward.

Why it exists

FreeImageConvert started from a simple frustration with existing online converters: upload limits, pop-up ads, watermarks, and the uneasy feeling of handing personal photos to a random server just to change a file extension. The goal was a converter that is fast, free, and doesn't ask for your files in the first place.

Who built it

FreeImageConvert is built and maintained by a solo, privacy-conscious developer. There's no company behind it, no investors, and no ad network reading your images, just one person maintaining a tool meant to stay out of your way.
